N.P

A Film by Lisa Spilliaert based on the novel by Banana Yoshimoto.
German Premiere.
B/J 2020, 60 min, Non-spoken, intertitles in English

During a summer in Japan four young people experience how they connect through the novel N.P by mysterious dead author Sarao Takase. The film adaptation dissects the complex network of relations between the characters and raises questions about translation and original, fiction and reality and predetermination.

The colours of summer define the atmosphere of N.P. and transform its complex and dark essence into a playful meditation about youth and the impact of past narratives on one’s own life.

Spilliaert was raised in Japan and Belgium, the dialogue between both cultures is a motive of her works. Her debut film uses subheads instead of speech, accenting the physical presence of words. The verbal silence is contrasted by compositions of musicians Wolf Eyes, Asuna, and Stacks.
