Last and First Men

A Film by Jóhann Jóhannsson, adapted from Olaf Stapledon’s novel.
ISL 2019, 70 min, OF

In two billion years, the human race is about to go extinct. The sole witnesses of its existence are abandoned, surreal monuments that scrape the sky and an aethereal voice which talks to us from a distant future.

Last and First Men’s protagonists are a concrete witness of Yugoslavian Brutalism, Tilda Swinton’s voice and the music of Jóhannson himself. His only feature film contains excerpts from the Olaf Stapledon’s visionary novel read by Tilda Swinton and is shot in 16mm monochrome by Strula Brandt Grøvlen.

Last and First Men is a hypnotic piece of art with hints of Stanley Kubrick, Béla Tarr and the avantgarde creates a cinema of synthesis between picture and sound and is an experiment of impossibility where prehistoric past and distant future meet.
